Running the Race

Run…

Run like the wind

Never give up

Never give in

Heart pumping

Legs burning

Can’t wait till the race is done

But for now, just run

The fear of not finishing

Drives you to move

Just keep going

Don’t let pain defeat you

Others run along side

Fighting too

You’re not alone

They’re just like you

It wasn’t meant to be easy

It never will

But stay on course

Fight those hills

Run your race

Persevere

The battle is fierce

But the victory is clear

Run to Jesus

With open arms He waits

For you to reach the finish

Heaven’s glorious gates

The pain will end

No more tears

No more suffering

Or consuming fears

Can’t wait to reach Heaven

To finally catch my breath

To cross that finish line

And find eternal rest

So I can raise my hands in victory

For in Jesus, I have won

Someday I’ll reach the finish

But for now, just gotta run.

Hebrews 12: 1 & 2: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

This poem was born as I was running down a gravel road in Iowa, preparing for a season of cross country. Anyone who has participated in this sport knows how tough it really is. I was never exceptional at it, always falling in the middle when finishing. But there was something satisfying about it, and it reminded me so much of what our earthly sojourn is like.
